NEWS FLASH LEEK have pulled off a major coup by landing the services of England Test star Ryan Sidebottom. We have been asked to play our part in England's summer tilt at the Ashes by fielding the 31 year old left-arm quickie, who has 77 wickets in 21 Tests and 24 further victims in 16 one-day internationals, for today's Premier League game against newly promoted Leycett at Highfield.
Sidebottom was recently named as one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year for 2008, is desperate for match practice following achilles surgery earlier this year. He hopes to play for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship next week, but his ultimate goal is to return to England's line-up in time to confront the Aussies later this summer.
"He played a friendly for Notts against Middlesex at the back end of last week, but wasn't really at 100 per cent," explained Nottinghamshire spokesman Michael Temple. "Only with more work out in the middle will he get fit enough to play county cricket again.
"He's still a centrally-contracted player with England and that's obviously where he wants to get back to. With the Ashes and the ICC Twenty20 World Cup this summer, he won't want to miss any international cricket if he can help it. "He's hoping to play for Notts against Lancashire on April 29, so I would imagine his bowling will be up towards full tilt for Leek.
"I'm not aware of any obvious link between Notts and Leek, but clearly it is an arrangement suiting both parties.
"Ryan is excellent in the dressing room and always has time for the younger players and the fans. Unfortunately, it is a one-off match for Leek, but I'm sure he will contribute well for them."
Leek captain Jamie Cullerton said: "You don't often get the chance to play with international players, never mind a current England player. "It's not been the easiest start, and we knew we would have a tight squad before we had players injured. But this is a massive boost for the club. "Hopefully it should kick-start our season and we can get our first win." "It's so important to get that first win. It gives you such confidence and you can go on a run."
Leek fielded former Derbyshire bowler Kevin Dean in last Saturday's opening-day draw at Audley as we await the arrival of West Indian Kevin Stoute, who has been contracted to play for the club this season.
